Six weekend getaways in Ontario worth considering when planning a trip

A weekend getaway is a perfect way to break up the monotony of a daily routine, relax and have some fun. The great thing about living in Ontario is that there are countless great places to visit. From world-famous tourist spots, outdoor activities and many local treasures, regardless of what you like to do, you should have no problem booking a weekend getaway in Ontario.

Here are six places worth visiting:

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is perhaps the most popular tourist destination in the province. It has something for everyone in the family: you can test your luck at the casinos, check out the attractions on Clifton Hill, or experience Niagara Falls, one of the true wonders of the world. Add to this the great restaurants and shopping, and you will have no trouble booking a fun-filled weekend.

Toronto

Without a doubt, Toronto is your best option for the “big city” experience. There is so much to see and do you could easily turn a weekend getaway into a week-long trip. Although trekking up the CN Tower, visiting the Ripley’s Aquarium and checking out the waterfront are all a must, Canada’s Wonderland, Dundas Square and the Eaton Centre are also great places to visit.

If you love to shop, you surely have to check out Queen West and Bloor Street, and if intellectual stimulation is more your thing, then the ROM and the Ontario Science Centre are great options. If you are a sports fan, you could check out a Leafs game and spend the day at the Hockey Hall of Fame, or check out a Raptors or Blue Jays game in the summer.

Depending on the time of year, you could also check out the Canadian National Exhibition, TIFF, Caribana, the Pride Parade or any one of the many amazing summer festivals.

Niagara-on-the-Lake

Looking for something low-key? Love wine and the simplicity of a bed-and-breakfast? Niagara-on-the-Lake is the destination for you. With numerous world-class wineries and excellent restaurants and theatres, it is the perfect setting for a romantic weekend getaway.

Stratford

One of the hidden gems of Ontario, Stratford has much more to offer than just being the birthplace of Justin Bieber. Get your fill of Shakespeare at the annual Stratford Festival and take in all the town has to offer.

Collingwood

If you are more of the outdoors type, then Collingwood may be the place for you. While it’s known for skiing, there is so much more to do all year-round. From cycling, water sports and hiking, to visiting great restaurants and spas in the area, it’s a great option for a couples getaway or a family trip.

Caesars at Windsor

Caesars Windsor Hotel and Casino has become a popular weekend getaway spot on the southern tip of Ontario. Located on the beautiful waterfront, the casino offers great restaurants, shows, concerts and much more. You can venture outside the casino to check out one of the many heritage sites, such as the birthplace of Canadian Club Whisky or the Underground Railroad, or you can make a quick trip across the lake for some cross-border shopping.

These are only a few of the many wonderful places to consider if you are planning a weekend getaway in Ontario. Other places you may want to consider include Algonquin Provincial Park, St. Jacob’s Farmers Market, cottage country in Muskoka, Bayfield and Pelee Island.
